Kids' health: Ultraprocessed food puts nutrition at risk | CTV News

The ultraprocessed foods your kids eat now may be putting them at greater risk for cardiometabolic problems – like heart attack, stroke and diabetes – in adulthood, a new study suggests. Many studies have shown the negative health effects of ultraprocessed foods in adults, but Friday’s study is among the first to show the impact they can have on the cardiometabolic health of young children, said Berger, who is also a professor of pediatrics at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. “This particular topic, ultraprocessed food consumptions and risk, is a very important topic in kids,” he said.Freeman stressed that giving kids ultraprocessed foods without also providing fresh fruits and vegetables sets them up for problems down the road. Adding in more nutritious foods and encouraging physical activity as much as possible is critical, Berger added. “If you can do something to create a healthy lifestyle early, there’s a reasonable chance that you can you can eliminate metabolic syndromes later in life like diabetes, obesity, and all the complications associated with diabetes and obesity,” he said.Stuart Berger, a pediatric cardiologist and chair of the section of cardiology and cardiac surgery for the American Academy of Pediatrics. He was not involved in the research. The information you need to know, sent directly to you: Download the CTV News App · The study, published Friday in JAMA Network Open, analyzed data from more than 1,400 children ages 3 to 6 recruited from schools across seven cities in Spain. The children’s caregivers met with researchers in person and completed questionnaires at home on physical activity, food consumption and demographics from 2019 to 2022, according to the study.“Americans eat ultraprocessed foods every day,” said Dr. Andrew Freeman, director of cardiovascular prevention and wellness at National Jewish Health in Denver.

Young kids failing to get adequate nutrition in early childcare centres, research suggests - ABC News

Research suggests young children are going hungry in early childhood centres, and being given food that doesn't meet dietary standards. A core problem, according to Professor Thorpe, is that the quality standards by which early childhood education and care services are judged don't directly address what and how much the kids are eating but are more focused on hygiene in food preparation, allergy prevention, and nutrition education. In addition, she said, quality inspectors assessing a centre can't necessarily rely on what they're being told. "We go into centres and observe and sometimes we will see menus that look very healthy, but that is not what the children eat."The second solution, she suggested, was to ensure early childhood education and care's national quality framework and quality standards against which these services are rated "look at the right things". Follow @abchealth on Instagram, where we're busting myths and sharing practical, smart health advice. ... A spokesperson for the Minister for Early Childhood Education Anne Aly said there were requirements under the national quality framework to ensure that food provided by a service was nutritious and adequate in quantity."Services that choose to provide food are required to have policies and procedures relating to nutrition and dietary requirements. This is monitored by state and territory regulatory authorities," they said in a statement. "The government will consider the final recommendations of the Productivity Commission inquiry and the future of the early learning system as we chart a course to universal early childhood education and care."
